Obviously, one would find it wrong to compare Varun Dhawan and Ranbir Kapoor. Even though the latter may have been a part of the industry for a longer time, we haven’t seen him row a steady boat in Bollywood. As opposed to Ranbir, Varun has right from his debut in Student Of The Year, maintained a rock steady pace.
Ranbir Kapoor recently starred in the much-hyped Bombay Velvet. The high-budget film tanked much sooner than expected, thus leaving Ranbir in a soup. Just a month prior to Bombay Velvet, Ranbir had already faced the repercussions of his disastrous cameo in Roy. The film was highly panned by the critics. In spite of giving a decent performance in Bombay Velvet, the actor faced criticism for the film’s poor script. Basically, post Besharam, the actor never re-surfaced.
Varun on other hand has been on a roll. The actor showed great potential with films like Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania which weren’t box office smashers but performed decently. With Badlapur and ABCD 2 this year, Varun proved that he is a bankable star and has a strong box office standing now.
Having said that, could Varun have pulled a role like Barfi or Rockstar, both being Ranbir’s career best performances? Well, certainly not. The audiences have enjoyed Varun’s films for their entire package. Content-driven cinemas are the new rage and hence a Besharam and Bombay Velvet could never have worked.
With Varun having Dilwale and Dishoom in his upcoming quota, Ranbir’s future plans still look shaky since Jagga Jasoos is repeatedly going through script changes. Also the massive delay could prove a villain. He also has Tamasha with Deepika Padukone for next year and Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which could bring him back amongst the top contenders.
