And you thought Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput’s announcement was the biggest Bollywood wedding news this year.
Lovers of B-town couples may be in for an even more dazzling treat, if rumours of Ranbir Kapoor getting down on his knee on Katrina Kaif’s birthday on July 16 are to be believed.
While celebrating, Kaif was apparently surprised by Kapoor when he presented her with a platinum-and-diamond eternity band. Soon after, they took off to London.
While we wait with bated breath for the confirmation, here’s a look at their relationship: present and past.
Kapoor is the son of Bollywood’s prominent acting dynasty; Kaif comes from a humble brood of eight siblings, and has a British mother and Indian father. They met in 2008, when Deepika Padukone, Kapoor’s then-girlfriend, introduced them at Kaif’s birthday bash.
Their friendship grew in 2009 while shooting Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani. A year later, Kapoor had a very public break up with Padukone, while Kaif secretly parted ways with Salman Khan.
Their political drama Rajneeti brought them closer in 2010. They started appearing out more often; attending parties and going for dinner.
For a long time, they managed to keep their relationship under wraps, however, their cover was blown when a fan photographed them holidaying in Ibiza, Spain, in 2013. Soon photographs of the two holding hands in swimwear were circulating all over the internet.
Kaif has the family’s approval, as revealed by Kapoor’s cousin Kareena Kapoor Khan in an episode of Koffee with Karan: she said that she would dance to Chikni Chameli at their wedding.
Earlier this year, Kaif was seen eating out with Kapoor’s family at a restaurant in Mumbai.
Kaif finally broke her silence in 2013 about her beau when she admitted he was a big part of her life. “Yes, of course! Ranbir is an extremely important part of my life, but beyond that I can’t say anything more,” she said.
Kapoor, when asked to name the important people in his life, added a ‘very special’ person to the list: “My family, Ayan [Mukherjee, director], Katrina, as she is a very special person in my life …”
In 2014, the couple took their relationship one step further by buying a flat together in Bandra, Mumbai, and Kapoor’s father Rishi admitted in an interview that the two were living together. A grand housewarming party was thrown with many celebrities being part of the guest list.
Rumours of a ring shining on Kaif’s hand have surfaced before. Last Christmas, many had thought that Kapoor had popped the question as Kaif was seen flaunting a large solitaire ring. Those rumours died when both actors denied it.
This time, however the rumour may be more concrete as neither has denied it. Besides, in an interview in May with Anandabazar Patrika, a Bengali daily, Kapoor admitted that a wedding would occur sometime next year. “This year both of us are extremely busy, so there won’t be any time for the marriage. We have planned to tie the knot by the end of next year. Both of us have agreed on that. Both of us are sure about our relationship and if we don’t open about it now, it would be showing disrespect to the relationship. I am 33 now and it is time I have my family. Even Katrina wants that.”
